For almost a hundred years, a period the Chinese call "the century of humiliation," foreign gunboats patrolled the Yangtze. Begin your journey in Shanghai, where the flat-bottom patrol boats were made, then work your way up the Whangpu and head for the mouth of the Yangtze. Your destination is Chungking. Your duty is to protect missionaries and American commercial interests and maintain friendly relations with the Chinese. Beware of bandits, unreliable pilots and rapids. NOTE: The symbols are self-explanatory. The small pyramid, like the + sign, can act as a zoom. Drag it right to zoom in. Drag it left, to zoom out, or click the - sign. Click arrows to move through the map. To return map to full view, press symbol at far right. (This interactive map, based on a prewar map of the area, is still under construction) |
