Comments on the book

“It is rare to get this precise a view of China from the Western businessman's angle. The incredible contrast between the enclosed Treaty Port world and the back-country world of poor Chinese villages is really dramatic. ...
A seamless book.”

JONATHAN SPENCE,
Sterling Professor of History,
Yale University

It is beautifully done. The text, maps, photos, calligraphy, chronology — all of its special features help convey Gould Thomas's voice.

SHERMAN G. COCHRAN,
Professor of History,
Cornell University

“An absolute treasure. It tells in a first-hand way and in gripping prose those turbulent days in Tsingtao in 1938.”

JAMES LILLEY, former ambassador and author of “China Hands”
(Public Affairs, 2004)

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the period or traveling to China. ... The book gives an excellent impression of what it must have been like to be in China during the Japanese invasion. It is also very well illustrated, with a large number of photos showing the things seen by Thomas during his adventure.”

ROBERT PEACE,
of gunboat Web site www.hmsfalcon.com

“I thoroughly enjoyed it. A thumping good read, as the British say."

“Doorway,” by Bertha Lum, ca. 1930's

"China Clipper" was released in 1936, the year the author set out from New York to visit the Orient.
It was just one of many films of the time that reflected the U.S.'s fascination with China.
Included in the film's cast was a little-known actor: Humphrey Bogart.
.
The story is more or less based on Juan Trippe and his early days after founding Pan American Airways. ,
