The French Cathedral in Old Canton, which dates to 1863-88. Needless to say it was built
on the site of a Chinese shrine, thus infuriating the inhabitants. The French, evidently,
were not disuaded from their project.

This was one of the few tall buildings in Canton in the 1930's. Originally the Sun and Company Department Store, it is still standing, under another name.

 

 

 




Surely, modern Canton is a city like no other. The current population is about 13 million.
